At last! A decent history class!

In a nice change from "Black History Months"; multi-racial festivals and the teaching of Urdu, White youngsters got a real life lesson when their classroom was transported 1,000 years into the past!
Chlidren of Swinnow Primary School, Leeds went back to the last millenium to become Anglo-Saxons for a day.
The nine to eleven year olds took on jobs such as thatchers, potters, farmers and tanners to experience the times of King Harold, the last Saxon King and his ancestors.
And Deputy Head Teacher Bill Taylor took on the role of Lord and Master of the Manor House. The building was created using hessian, straw, dark wood and shields attcahed to the walls of the classroom.
The event, part of ongoing Anglo-Saxon project began as soon as the children stepped through the door of the school. They were asked to turn up in Saxon costume, complete with tights and linen tunic and remained in Old English character for the day.
After serving their master during the morning, they cooked up a traditional soup using root vegetables that would have been available at the time.
Headteacher Alison said "It's always quite hard to get the children to eat vegetables, but it's a little easier when they have cooked them for themselves! We are holding the event for a different year group each day. The response has been fantastic. The children really enjoy it and get into character. We have done similar things when we have learned about Victorian England. We just find it a very good way of getting the message across to the pupils. They can see, hear and smell how it used to be, so it really grabs their attention in a way just using books or films cannot".

The BPP says well done the children of Swinnow School for showing such interest in their Anglo-Saxon roots - under a BPP government their would be White Pride weeks too!
