Simon Sheppard - Update!

The rather somber-looking Glasgow Sheriff Court

Today I travelled with other BPP representatives to Glasgow Sheriff Court (we left at 3am for the four and a half hour drive!) to represent Simon Sheppard in his absence for a charge of 'Inciting Religious Hatred'. When we arrived we were told that the case would be called second to last, then it changed to last, but despite the brief confusion it went as well as could be expected.  They clearly hadn't anticipated supporters appearing (all dressed very smartly!) or speaking on Simon's behalf, so that alone was more than worth nearly ten hours of travel for us!

As Scottish law differs from English, it's important to mention that whilst 'inciting religious hatred' has only been criminalised in England less than six months, it has been in place in Scotland for years.  Also the case was heard by a Sheriff and not a magistrate although this is the equivalent but sheriffs seem to have proper legal qualifications.  All in all it was an interesting and very conducive experience!
