THE SADNESS OF A LEEDS REMEMBRANCE DAY An observation by Eddy Morrison A small number of Leeds BPP comrades attended the official November 11th Remembrance Service today at Leeds Main Cenotaph. There were about 200 people congregated - with a contingent of around thirty British Legion present together with piper and bugler. Four uniformed serving members of the Parachute Regiment helped lay the wreaths. It was a sad service for two reasons - firstly, the most obvious one - the occasion marking the day when we honour the British fallen of ALL wars in defence of our people. The second is an even sadder one. The poor numbers attending today and the obvious decline of the Royal British Legion, with no young Legion members visible at all. This was compounded by the many shoppers and other members of the public who passed by and ignored the ceremony and even the two minute silence - which despite the haunting sound of 'The Last Post' was marred by car horns blaring and other noises. A far cry indeed when I can remember as a youngster walking through Leeds Market with my mum and being brought to a rigid halt as the clock on Leeds Parish Church tolled eleven. The whole market froze and even at nine years old I was impressed as market traders stopped selling, men removed hats and caps and even traffic came to a halt. The whole of Leeds city centre was silent. That was forty-odd years ago - the dead are still with us and in the words of one veteran today - "They gave their todays for our tomorrows". What tomorrows have we inherited? Strange and terrible ones for a land and people from whom true patriotism is being driven out.
