Trouble on the Streets, now they tell us!

So now it has become an undeniable fact even to the most sheltered individual, the government have finally admitted that the streets of Britain’s towns and cities are out of control. But as per usual they are only admitting part of the problem. Yes, drunken yobs are making life miserable for hundreds of thousands of British people, but it is not just the drunk, and it is hardly all to blame on mere yobs. This has been going on for years, since long before anyone had even heard of a ‘hoodie’. So while the mindless violence and vandalism plagues our streets, while innocents are caught in the crossfire as gun crime rises, and as organised criminals send their heavies into pitched battles to gain control of lucrative contraband markets, our government are releasing 1000 convicted criminals a week.

Anyone browsing the news today would think that the droids that walk the corridors of power here actually cared. Their latest offering being a ‘a hard-hitting report by the Commons Public Accounts Committee’. One can almost feel their despair and taste their tears as those browbeaten men in their stuffed shits came up with ‘a warning that a small proportion of families and individuals were causing "misery and despair" to communities, particularly in the most deprived areas’.

Committee chairman Edward Leigh called for "absolutely rigorous" action against a hardcore of offenders who regarded anti-social behaviour orders as "part and parcel of their way of life". The report concluded that the Home Office were to blame for apparently failing to research which courses of action served as the best deterrent against such anti social activities.

They found that 65% of people stopped misbehaving after a single intervention - often a simple warning letter.

About 93% of those studied had given up anti-social behaviour after three brushes with the authorities, but a hardcore continued regardless.

Only 20% of the individuals accounted for more than half of the interventions and, among this group, those with convictions had an average of 50 each.

One person had 271 criminal convictions and had breached his Asbo 25 times.

Mr Leigh said: "Behaviour ranges from drunken skylarking and intimidation to out-and-out criminal activity.

"No civilised country should have to put up with what can seem like an occupying army loose in the streets."

He said the financial cost of responding to such anti-social behaviour was £3.4bn a year. One would imagine that this final statistic is causing the most concern among our most wondrous and dedicated politicians.

Street crime just like any other is all about money. And until the whores in Westminster begin to put their nation’s people before the failed capitalist system, it will never go away. 

Water Water Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink

That’s right folks, it’s British Summer Time again. And after years of droughts, hosepipe bans, and warnings about the environment, we now find large area’s of the country underwater after just a few weeks of rainfall. But don’t drink the water, it is poisonous!

Parts of Britain are suffering their worst flooding in 60 years, with thousands of people cut off and others without access to clean water.

The Royal Air Force has undertaken what it said was probably its biggest-ever peacetime rescue operation, picking up more than 100 people.

The worst-hit areas are Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire, where nine flood warnings are in place, and the rivers Thames and Severn are spilling over, with chaotic results for homes and businesses.

With swathes of central and western England under water and more rain on its way, the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, yesterday flew in a helicopter over water-logged Gloucestershire before meeting officials handling the response on the ground.

Compounding the misery, a reported 150,000 homes do not have drinking water after a water treatment plant in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, was closed after becoming deluged. The situation led to panic buying of bottled water in the county.

Firefighters and RAF servicemen spent Sunday night trying to protect two electricity substations from the floods, which could leave up to half a million people in Gloucestershire without power.

On Sunday the Government defended its handling of the crisis, but the chief executive of the Environment Agency, Lady Young, warned it would cost £1 billion a year to prevent further flooding, and predicted worsening conditions in future due to climate change.

The floods come less than a month after seven people were killed as water devastated large areas of northern England.

And so with our weather becoming ever more unpredictable, one wonders what to expect in 2008. Heat waves, floods, a new ice age? One thing is almost certain water will become the most valuable commodity!
