NATIONALIST WEEK No.32 10th January 2005

The weekly online e-zine of the Spearhead Group

To the dead heroes of Britain, in sacred union, we say: like you, we give ourselves to Britain – across the ages that divide us, across the glories of Britain that unite us – we gaze into your eyes and give this holy vow: we will be true -Today, Tomorrow and Forever – Britain lives!”

GRIFFIN REFUSES JOHN TYNDALL’S APPEAL!

As many will know, John Tyndall is resolved to take to the High Court the matter of his expulsion from the BNP (for the second time in just over a year) by Nick Griffin. In order to make a valid application to the court, Mr. Tyndall will have to show that he has exhausted all internal means of getting the expulsion reversed. Therefore he was obliged to go through the formality of an appeal to Mr. Griffin against the guilty verdicts and sentence resulting therefrom. This was something of a farce, since Mr. Griffin's decision on the matter was never in doubt.

In a letter dated the 30th December, Mr. Griffin gave Mr. Tyndall formal notice of his rejection of the appeal. The letter contained a paragraph which might be of some interest to readers of NW. It ran as follows:-

"If you really believe that recent Human Rights legislation has made it impossible for any organisation to deal with undesirables among its membership then the matter will, unfortunately, in all probability be tested in court. Our understanding of recent case law is that you are mistaken in this belief, so it is only fair that I warn you that we will defend any action you may bring by using professional lawyers right from the start, and will seek full costs from you once your action fails."

The above invites some comment. First of all, Mr. Tyndall's intended action in the court will not depend on any recent 'Human Rights' legislation but will rest on a claim that his expulsion was contrary to all principles of natural justice, and he will, among other things, cite as a precedent a similar case that was heard in 1968 -- a very long time before the 'Human Rights' legislation to which Mr. Griffin refers, so that any understanding of 'recent case' law as referred to by Mr. Griffin would not be relevant.

It is also quite ridiculous to suggest that Mr. Tyndall wishes to rest his case on legislation that "has made it impossible for any organisation to deal with undesirables among its membership." Mr. Tyndall is firmly in favour of organisations having just this power. The argument is about who are the 'undesirables' and who not. Some NW readers will find it faintly comic that the BNP's founder is now classified as an 'undesirable' among the party's membership! However, this can be passed over as an example of the paranoid fantasy world in which dwell the current BNP leaders.

It will be known that a similar action taken by Mr. Tyndall in 2003 to get an expulsion overturned succeeded. Legal opinion on this latest action is that his chances of doing so again are very favourable, if not even more so than last time. If the matter does go to court, as Mr. Griffin promises will happen, and if professional lawyers are used from the start, as he also promises, should Mr. Tyndall win, this will result in the BNP being landed with a huge bill for costs. This will come at a time when the party will be asking its members and supporters to donate generously to provide funds for its general election bid, scheduled for May this year. It might be asked: is this expulsion, and its likely consequence to the party, a mature and responsible way for Mr. Griffin to settle his differences with Mr. Tyndall? Would it not be far better for the issues that have divided these two leaders, and their respective ranks of supporters, to be taken to a general members' meeting to be resolved in open debate?

And would Mr. Griffin be acting in this cavalier way in a matter that could involve the BNP in enormous expense if it were he personally, and not the party, who would have to foot the final bill?

RELIGIOUS HATRED BILL SECOND READING

We would remind all White Nationalists that this nasty bit of Labour-New Marxist legislation is up for its second reading in the House of Commons this Tuesday 11th January. In every sense of the word and backed by much legal opinion this law, unjust and unfair is also unworkable. It achieves two objectives. It further tightens the throttle on free speech in this country and secondly it is a sop to the huge and fast growing Muslim population of Great Britain, whose votes Labour-New Marxist are in danger of losing after Blair’s lunatic involvement in the Iraq no-win war. Do everything you can to draw people’s attention to this gross attack on our freedom to express our views. We will keep you updated on this obnoxious legislation designed specifically to pacify the followers of Islam in the UK and a blatant act of vote grabbing by the Blairites now sinking to a new love level even for that nasty little bunch!

'My book was just too British for them to publish” – so author publishes himself.

George Courtauld's simple guide to historical facts has been a runaway
success. But, he tells Bryony Gordon, he had to publish it himself

One in 10 Britons thinks that Hitler wasn't real. A quarter of the
population believe that King Arthur existed. One in five people in the
UK
think Harold Wilson was Prime Minister during the Second World War, while 30
per cent of 11 to 18-year-olds do not know which century the First World War
took place in.

Britain, it seems, is forgetting its history. Thank goodness, then, for The
Pocket Book of Patriotism. The 64-page volume is a timeline of historic
events that made the
UK the nation it is today. From Stonehenge in 2000 BC
to the
England rugby team's World Cup triumph in 2003, the book contains the
essential dates, quotes and speeches of our history. It is perfect for those
teenagers who can name the line-up of the new Band Aid single, but not the
six wives of Henry VIII.

However, the book was not the brainchild of a distinguished academic, but of
City head-hunter George Courtauld, whose history credentials stretch no
further than a grade D at A-level.

"Oh dear, my credibility will be ruined," he laughs. "But those were the
days when not everybody got five As. And I have always been passionate about
the subject." Forty-year-old Courtauld, who read philosophy at
Cambridge,
believes the fact that he is not an academic is the reason for the wide
appeal of the book: it allows him, without any lofty pretensions, to offer
readers the information that they have always felt too stupid to seek.

Courtauld may not have much academic authority, but he does have deep
historical links with the country of which he is so proud. His father is the
Vice- Lord Lieutenant of Essex and a former Queen's Messenger, and he is
great friends with Earl Spencer, with whom he went to prep school. Courtauld
was an usher at the Earl's wedding, and will be giving him The Pocket Book
of Patriotism as a Christmas present. "He says he wants a copy, but I
couldn't possibly let him buy it."

The idea for the book came about last Christmas Eve, when Courtauld was on
the train home from work to his house in the
Essex countryside.

"There was a little boy with his arm in a sling looking for a seat next to
his friends. A kindly older woman offered him hers, suggesting that `little
Lord Nelson' might like to sit." But the boy did not know whom the woman was
talking about. "She said: `You know,
England expects! Admiral Nelson',"
recalls Courtauld. "And the boy replied: `Of course, the man in Star Trek!'
"

Courtauld thought this all rather sad, and recounted the tale to his wife
and three young sons. Appalled that the younger generation was woefully
ignorant of the fascinating heritage of the
British Isles, Courtauld spent
his 10-day Christmas holiday researching and drawing up a chart containing
all the historic events he thought his children should know about. He pinned
the list ("about seven A4 pages") to the loo door so that they could glance
at it when they walked past - and that, he thought, was that.

But word of Courtauld's list spread among friends and family, who were
equally concerned about their children's lack of historical knowledge. Two
months later, more than 100 people had requested a photocopy.

It was then that Courtauld realised there was a market for a "very simple
history book". Or, as he describes it: "No judgment, no padding - just the
bare bones of our magnificent history."

He spent the next six months researching and checking facts and events.
"There were moments when I found, to my horror, that I'd got something 100
years out," he laughs, before hastily pointing out a professional checker
was employed. "But it was the most absurd amount of fun and hugely
educational."

Remarkably, Courtauld had to publish the book himself. He approached several
publishers, but none felt his idea had the winning formula. Some of them
even advised him to take out the most patriotic elements of the book - the
flags, the Churchill speeches - and to tone down the title. Courtauld
insisted all of these were vital. "Everyone seemed concerned about the
Britishness of it all," he says. "Patriotism nowadays seems to be linked
with movements like the BNP."

Financed with the help of friends, Courtauld printed 10,000 copies of the
book and published it last month. He needed to sell half of them to break
even - a tall order without a publishing house's marketing muscle behind
him.

Yet such is the demand for The Pocket Book of Patriotism that,
astonishingly, he took 26,000 orders in the first week. It is now into its
fifth print run, and the website Courtauld set up to sell the book received
142,000 hits last Thursday alone.

When we first met, a week before publication, only one bookshop had agreed
to stock the book. Now, thanks to customer demand, several book chains,
including Ottakars and Waterstones, have placed large orders for it.

"They didn't want to talk to me about it even two weeks ago. It's completely
bonkers," says Courtauld, clearly shocked by the book's success. "I really
thought I'd sell 200 copies and that would be it. When I sold 1,000 books at
the launch party, I was surprised. I didn't for one minute think I would
shift the 10,000 copies I originally printed, let alone in four days."

Yesterday, he received 800 letters, which, he says, is "completely
overwhelming and makes me feel genuinely euphoric".

Most of them say how brilliant it is to be able to get to grips with history
without feeling intimidated. "I think that is the appeal; it's totally
unpolitical."

His headhunting colleagues are thrilled for him, he says. So will he be
giving up his day job to become a full-time historian? "Oh no," he laughs.
"I'm not a scholar. I'm a bit of a one-trick pony! This is merely a father's
take on our heritage for his children.

"I just felt it was an important thing to do. Children don't seem to know
enough about our history - they see all these blockbuster films, such as
Pearl Harbour and Braveheart, that give them a completely horrendous and
wrong view of what actually happened.

"What I hope is that children - and grown-ups, too - will read this book and
think: 'That's interesting, I'd love to find out more about it', and go and
look it up."

As Courtauld himself proves, it's never too late to learn a bit of history.
