“Poor old Joe”, or the new laws on ‘gay’ rights

Just for a moment, put yourself in the position of Joe Soap, who runs a very successful B & B business with his Wife and family. It is a couple of decades since Joe went to church and, in his own view, all religions, including Christianity, are strictly for the birds. The Soaps get along pretty well. Their visitors book is loaded with commendations, e.g. “We enjoyed our stay and were very well looked after” Patsy from Eastbourne or, “The best B & B we have visited south of Edinburgh” Ian from Callander.

And then, one day, two queers turn up at his front door demanding a room. Now, unlike our Archbishop of Canterbury or his opposite number in the RC Church, Joe does not have that very convenient little attachment, known as a ‘conscience’. All that he has is his principles; principles handed down to him from generation after generation. OK, he knows that in Cool Britannia he has to be tolerant. Moreover, daughter, Lucy aged just seventeen, is right beside him, watching, wondering, what Dad will do next.

“Sorry mate, can’t do it. You’ll have to try somewhere else.” After all, what would Lucy, Robert and Jacqueline think if Dad did not stick to his principles?

And, like all loyal children, they with their Mum, will visit him while he is serving his sentence.
