UNION
MOVEMENT REMEMBERED
![]() At a small get together in February, BPP supporters in Manchester enjoyed slices of the above cake. This was to mark the anniversary of the creation of Sir Oswald Mosley's Union Movement on 7th February 1948. Over the following years the Union Movement stood one or more candidates in every Municiple Election for Manchester City Council. Sadly though, all of the council wards where the UM stood such as Rusholme, Moss Side, St Marks and Longsight are now majority non-White wards. Despite the change in racial make-up of these areas, today's BPP supporters draw inspiration and a degree of pride from the UM campaigns and the bravery shown by its members. It may be of interest for many to know that the Union Movement elections officer for the Manchester Chorlton-cum-Hardy Ward in May 1962 was Walter Hesketh. Walter was an established international athlete who was the first of only two athletes ever to win the Youth (1948), Junior (1950), and Senior (1952) English National Cross Country titles. Like many English cities, Manchester has a rich history of fascism which still had a presence in the city right up to 1971 when the last Union Movement candidate stood in May of that year. |
